Scrapbook of Palmetto Guard memorabilia, 1872-1896.

Volume compiled by A. Baron Holmes contains letters, orders, clippings, and ephemera relating to the Palmetto Guard of Charleston (S.C.), United Confederate Veterans, South Carolina politics, and the South Carolina State Militia. Letters (1881) from various individuals decline invitations to the 30th Annual Maroon of the Palmetto Guard on the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Moultrie. Holograph orders (1878) from S.C. Boylston, adjutant at the headquarters of the First Regiment Rifles, South Carolina Volunteer State Troops, Charleston (S.C.) to Capt. George Lamb Buist, commanding officer of the Palmetto Guard concern roll of members and election of officers. Clippings concern meetings and activities of the Palmetto Guard, the Fort Moultrie Centennial Monument, South Carolina politics, and South Carolina militia. Ephemera include invitations (to reunions, meetings, and anniversary celebrations), printed dinner menus, and tickets for Palmetto Guard events; addresses and resolutions; the monogram and seal of the Palmetto Guard (1878); badges worn at the unveiling of the Confederate Monument in Columbia (S.C.) on May 13, 1879, at an 1882 event and an 1885 event, and at a 40th (1891) and a 45th (1896) anniversary celebration of the Guard; receipts for an insurance policy (1879) taken out by members of the Guard and for instructions (1889) for Holmes' niece; $100 revenue bond scrip (1872) and broadsides related to the Palmetto Guard.
